What Kind of Oil Does a Hyundai Elantra Take?

2022 Hyundai Elantra on city street

Routinely changing your oil is an essential part of automotive maintenance. As a Hyundai owner, you’re accustomed to smooth drives and high-quality – sticking to regular maintenance will help preserve that feeling behind the wheel! If you don’t keep pace with Hyundai Elantra recommended oil changes, your engine could suffer as a result. Neglecting oil changes can lead to overheating and excessive wear and tear. Generally, most vehicles need an oil change once every 7,500 – 10,000 miles, but you can find out the exact intervals in your owner’s manual

If your Hyundai Elantra is due for an oil change, you can always schedule service with us at our Folsom Hyundai service center to get the maintenance you need in no time. However, if you have a DIY spirit, you might be asking what kind of oil does a Hyundai Elantra take? Below, you’ll find information on the Hyundai Elantra recommended oil types. What’s more, if you’re eager to take on the project in your Sacramento or Rancho Cordova garage, you can follow the steps below to change your Hyundai Elantra’s oil.

Hyundai Elantra Recommended Oil Type

The proper Hyundai Elantra oil type comes in two variants: conventional and synthetic. Conventional is unrefined crude oil that’s used in most vehicles. With conventional, you’ll need an oil change every 3,000 – 5,000 miles. However, it’s important to remember that conventional oil is the most affordable option.

Synthetic oil is more expensive upfront, but offers enhanced qualities and is the ideal Hyundai Elantra oil type. Synthetic oil is refined and includes additives that help the oil last longer and work better. Synthetic oil can last up to 10,000 miles before it needs to be changed.

So, what kind of oil does a Hyundai Elantra take? If you’re shopping for Hyundai Elantra oil, select the following grades of either synthetic or conventional:

  • 5W-20
  • 5W-30

5W-20 or 5W-30 oil offers the proper density for your Elantra to brave winter cold and summer heat. If you opt for 0W-15 or a 10W-40 oil, the oil will be too thin to properly protect the engine parts or too thick to work between them. When in doubt, ask our service pros for guidance when selecting the correct Hyundai Elantra oil type.

How to Change Hyundai Elantra Oil

If you’re ready to roll your sleeves up and get to work on your Elantra, the following steps will guide you through how to perform a Hyundai Elantra oil change:

  1. Purchase either 5W-20 or the 5W-30 in synthetic or conventional oil.
  2. Buy a recommended oil filter from our parts department.
  3. Raise your Elantra on a car jack or with steel ramps. Secure it with jack stands or wheel blocks.
  4. Head under your car and locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of your oil pan. You can utilize your owner’s manual to find the exact location if you’re unsure.
  5. Place an oil basin directly under the plug. Unscrew the plug and allow the old oil to drain for up to 15 minutes. When the oil has completely drained, replace the plug.
  6. Find your oil filter under your engine and move the oil basin under it.
  7. With an oil filter wrench, remove the oil filter. You can expect a bit of oil to drain at this point, so make sure the basin is in place.
  8. Rub a bit of oil around the rubber seal of the new filter, this will ensure it’s watertight.
  9. Set the filter in place and tighten by hand.
  10. Remove the cap of your oil well and pour the specified amount of new oil into the reservoir. You should expect to use about 4.2 quarts for the Hyundai Elantra, but double-check the specifics in your owner’s manual.
  11. Replace your oil well cap.
  12. Before you clean up, check the oil level with your dipstick. If the volume is low, slowly add more oil and continue to check until the level is sufficient. Once you have a proper oil level reading, you’re all set!
